Community Activity

The Lane College parade was a success. The Dragons even finished up the day with a WIN!!!!!!! against Stillman College. Here, we are seen getting ready.Yes, there was a chill in the air. The team spirit is the essence of Character through Culture.

We decorated the vehicle, greeted friends, laughed and got a good lesson in the power of teamwork. Remember the journal Junie B. Jones kept? It was her Top Secret Personal Beeswax Journal. Maybe you could start your own?

We are continuing to define this newsletter as an expression of community activism. A record of events, thoughts, places and people who in some way big or small affect your life.

The Pledge of Allegiance

Community activism is an extension of allegiance to this country, and, thus, the topic of this newsletter is just that. After the Civil War, Frank Bellamy in 1892 wrote this to unite children in the United States which had been previously divided. The result was a verse that inspired a sense of pride about what the country would become and not what it had been.

First Pledge (Before 1954)

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Second Pledge (After 1954)

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

What about being an American makes each of you proud?

The 18th Annual African Street Festival

The performance was beautiful. The community benefited by the cultural ambassador’s diligence, patience and awareness. Many praises were given to Ms.Jendayi with instructions to relay this positive affirmation to the ambassadors. Know that the City of Jackson is very proud of you.

AfriLiterature

Africa is the land of fables. Aesop, as some writers maintain, was born in Africa during the sixth century B.C. - in Cyrenaica, which was then Greek speaking. Some of his fables are still told in Africa. He himself told fables that he must have heard from Indian travelers, perhaps indirectly from Persian storytellers. In any case, some African fables certainly come from Indian sources, especially some of those heard on the coast of East Africa, which has had trade links with India for many centuries
In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.

"Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?"

"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same."

"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; we have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.
When the winter came the Grasshopper found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing, every day, corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer.

Then the Grasshopper knew...
It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.

Movie of the Month

It’s Friday and what movie should the family rent?

A young girl learns to believe in herself and value her intelligence in this critically-acclaimed, family-friendly drama. Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer) is an 11-year-old being raised by her mother, Tanya (Angela Bassett), who was left on her own after the death of her husband. While Akeelah is a very bright she doesn't always believe in herself. Entering a spelling bee changes all of that.
